Vocal Jazz Workshops
From Standards to Improvisation
Gwen offers workshops for all levels, from beginners looking for an introduction to the world of jazz singing to the more advanced singer who needs to refine his or her skills.
The workshops cover basic musicianship—analysis of tunes, understanding chords and chord changes, ear training, rhythm, and improvisation, as well as learning songs from the standard jazz repertoire.
Jazz is an improvisational music and therefore the workshops emphasize this too-often overlooked aspect of vocal jazz. Freedom in improvisation is grounded not only in an understanding and mastery of certain musical concepts but, importantly, in the development of the singer's aural skills. These workshops help to build confidence and self trust.
Although for the beginners' workshops it is not necessary to read music, the advanced workshop participants should have some knowledge of basic music theory.
